Windows Updates: Why 'Remind Me Later' Is Costing You More Than Time

We get it — the update prompt always appears at the worst time, and "remind me later" is only a click away. What updates actually do

• Security patches close holes that criminals actively exploit. When Microsoft releases a patch, attackers immediately study it to attack anyone who hasn't installed it. An unpatched computer becomes more vulnerable, not less, as time passes.
• Bug fixes resolve crashes, printing failures, Wi-Fi dropouts and battery drain — many "mystery" problems we see are fixed by updates the owner had been postponing.
• Driver and compatibility improvements keep hardware and software working together as both evolve.

The Windows 10 reality check

Windows 10 reached end of support in October 2025, which means no more free security patches. If your computer still runs Windows 10, it is accumulating unpatched vulnerabilities every month. Making updates painless

1. Set active hours so Windows never restarts mid-workday: Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options.
2. Let it restart weekly. Many updates only complete on restart — the laptop that's "never turned off" is often half-updated and unstable.
3. Don't forget the rest: browsers, Office, Adobe and — most forgotten of all — your router's firmware need updating too.
4. Back up first. Updates rarely cause trouble, but a good backup makes any problem a shrug instead of a crisis.

When an update goes wrong

Occasionally an update fails, loops or breaks something. Most of these are recoverable: Windows can roll back recent updates, boot into recovery, or repair-install without losing files. What we don't recommend is force-powering off repeatedly during an update — that's how systems end up unbootable. If an update has left your computer stuck, we can usually rescue it with files intact.
