Video doorbells: the gateway security device

• Wired beats battery. Battery doorbells are fine for renters, but wired units never need charging, respond faster and record more reliably. If you have old doorbell wiring, it can usually be reused; if you're renovating, run the cable now.

Intercoms: units, gates and front desks

For gated homes, duplexes and apartment buildings, modern IP intercoms replace the crackly speaker box: video calling to phones (no wall handset needed), remote gate/door release, and logs of who buzzed when. Retrofits are very achievable; existing gate wiring can often be reused.

Access control: keys you can't lose (or copy)

Physical keys have a flaw every business knows: they get copied, lost and kept by ex-staff, and rekeying is expensive. Electronic access — keypads, fobs, cards or phone credentials — fixes the model: each person gets their own credential, access is revoked in seconds when someone leaves, doors can auto-lock on schedule, and you get a log of who entered when. For small offices, clinics, gyms and workshops this is cheaper and simpler than most owners expect, and it pairs naturally with CCTV: the camera sees, the access log confirms.

The part that decides everything: installation quality

All of these are network devices, which means the familiar rules apply — solid Wi-Fi or cabling where the device lives (a doorbell at the edge of coverage is a doorbell that doesn't ring), default passwords changed, firmware maintained, and cameras/entry systems kept on a protected network segment.
