Home office IT setup Gold Coast - remote work desk with monitor and laptop

The Perfect Home Office Setup: An IT Guide for Gold Coast Remote Workers

Hybrid and remote work is now permanent for thousands of Gold Coast professionals — and the difference between a frustrating home office and a great one is almost entirely IT. At Real IT Consulting we build proper home office setups from Robina to Hope Island to Palm Beach. Here's the checklist that separates "it mostly works" from "it just works."

1. Internet where you actually sit

The number one home office complaint is video calls dropping — and it's almost never the NBN plan. It's Wi-Fi limping through three walls from a router at the other end of the house. The fixes, in order of preference: an Ethernet cable to the office (the gold standard — stable, fast, done), a mesh Wi-Fi unit near the workspace, or relocating the router. If your suburb has fibre upgrade options available, higher upload speeds make cloud work and calls noticeably better — we can advise what's available at your address.

2. A setup that doesn't hurt

A laptop alone is a neck injury on a payment plan. The minimum for daily work: an external monitor (two transforms productivity), a proper keyboard and mouse, and the laptop raised so the camera hits eye level. Add a decent headset — your colleagues will notice the difference before you do.

3. Video calls that make you look professional

Three cheap wins: light your face from the front (never sit with a bright Queensland window behind you), use a headset instead of laptop audio, and cable or mesh the connection so you stop being "you're frozen" person in every meeting.

4. Security your employer would approve of

Home workers are a favourite attack path into businesses — the security is usually softer at home. The essentials:

  • A router that isn't ancient, with updated firmware and a changed admin password
  • Work accounts protected by multi-factor authentication
  • A separate user account (or better, separate computer) for work vs family use — the kids' game downloads and your employer's files shouldn't share a login
  • Automatic backup for anything work-related stored locally
  • VPN or secure remote access configured properly if you connect to office systems

5. Power protection — the forgotten one

Gold Coast storm season and desktop computers don't mix. A small UPS (battery backup) keeps your computer and router alive through blips and gives you time to save work in a real outage — and doubles as surge protection for your most expensive equipment.

6. When it's your business, not just your job

Running a business from home adds the rest of the stack: professional email on your own domain, Microsoft 365, reliable backups, maybe a bookings page and a Teams phone number that isn't your personal mobile. All very achievable in a home office — we set these up constantly.
