Tech Myths vs Facts: 10 Things Everyone Believes About Computers That Are Wrong
Share
Some tech beliefs refuse to die — we hear them on the Real IT Consulting workbench every week, from Southport to Palm Beach. Time to bust the ten most stubborn myths with the facts.
Myth 1: "Macs don't get viruses"
Fact: Macs get malware, adware and phishing attacks too — and Mac users are prime targets for scams precisely because they believe they're immune. Every computer needs updates, backups and healthy scepticism.
Myth 2: "My computer is slow, so it must have a virus"
Fact: Sometimes — but more often it's an ageing hard drive, too little RAM, clogged cooling or startup bloat. Diagnosis beats guessing: fixing the wrong problem wastes money.
Myth 3: "Charging overnight ruins your battery"
Fact: Modern devices stop charging at full and manage themselves. What genuinely ages batteries is heat — like living in a hot car — and sitting at 0% or 100% for weeks.
Myth 4: "More bars = faster internet"
Fact: Bars show signal strength to your router, not internet speed. You can sit next to the router with full bars and still crawl if the connection, plan or router itself is the bottleneck.
Myth 5: "Private browsing makes me anonymous"
Fact: Incognito mode only stops your own browser saving history. Websites, your internet provider and your workplace network can still see your activity.
Myth 6: "Deleted files are gone forever"
Fact: Usually they're recoverable — good news when you delete by accident, and important news when selling a computer: a simple delete doesn't securely erase your personal data. Proper wiping does.
Myth 7: "I'm too small for hackers to bother with"
Fact: Attacks are automated and don't check who you are. Small businesses and individuals are targeted because defences are weaker. Everyone's email and banking is worth stealing.
Myth 8: "Turning it off and on again is a lazy fix"
Fact: It's a legitimate one — a restart clears stuck memory and processes. But if the same problem keeps returning, the restart is masking something that needs actual fixing.
Myth 9: "OneDrive/Google Drive means I'm backed up"
Fact: Sync is not backup. Delete or ransomware-encrypt a file and the damage syncs to the cloud too. Real backup keeps versioned copies you can wind back to.
Myth 10: "A slow old laptop belongs in the bin"
Fact: Most laptops under seven years old can be transformed with an SSD, more RAM and a clean-up — at a fraction of replacement cost. And when it truly is time, a warrantied refurbished business laptop beats a new budget machine at the same price.
