Storm Season Tech Prep: Protecting Your Computers and Network Through a Gold Coast Summer

Every Gold Coast summer delivers the same pattern: spectacular storms roll off the hinterland, the power flickers and surges — and the following week our workbench fills with dead power supplies, fried modems and computers that never woke up. Surges: the silent killer

Lightning doesn't need to hit your house — a strike streets away pushes surges down power lines, phone lines and even network cables. Surges also arrive undramatically, from grid switching when power is restored after an outage. The defence, in layers:

• Quality surge-protected power boards for computers, TVs, consoles and the NBN equipment — and note that surge protectors wear out: a board that's absorbed hits (or is more than a few years old) protects less than you think. The bargain-bin four-outlet strip is not surge protection.
• Unplug during severe storms. Old-fashioned, still the only 100% effective defence. When the warnings turn severe, two minutes of unplugging beats any hardware.

When storms flicker the power, a UPS rides through blips (which corrupt files and kill hard drives mid-write), gives desktops time to shut down cleanly in a real outage, and keeps the modem, router and Wi-Fi alive — meaning internet and phones continue through short outages. Backups: the storm test

After the storm
