Why 'deleted' doesn't mean gone

Deleting files — even emptying the Recycle Bin, even a quick format — mostly just removes the index entries. The data itself sits on the drive until something overwrites it, and recovery tools rebuild it easily. We demonstrate this for sceptical customers regularly; the look on their faces says it all.

What secure erasure actually involves

• Modern Windows PCs: a full reset using the "clean data" option does a reasonable job on most recent machines — but the default quick reset does not.
• SSDs: best erased with the manufacturer's secure-erase routine, which resets every cell. On encrypted drives, destroying the encryption key renders data unreadable in seconds — which is one more reason to enable encryption today.
• Old mechanical drives: professional wiping software overwrites every sector. For drives holding truly sensitive data — or drives too dead to wipe — physical destruction is the certain option, and yes, we do that too.
• Don't forget the extras: sign out of your Microsoft/Apple/Google accounts first (activation locks can make the device useless to the buyer), and remember phones, tablets, USB sticks and the SD card in the old camera all carry data too.
