Slow internet troubleshooting Gold Coast - find the real cause

Internet Slow at Home? How to Find the Real Culprit Before Calling Your Provider

"The internet is slow" is the most common tech complaint in any Gold Coast household — and the most misdiagnosed. People upgrade plans that were never the problem, buy routers that don't help, and spend hours on hold with providers about faults that live inside their own walls. Here's the systematic way we find the real culprit for customers around Palm Beach, Currumbin, Carrara and beyond.

Step 1: Measure at the source

Run a speed test on a computer cabled directly to the router (or standing right beside it on Wi-Fi if cabling isn't possible), with other devices quiet. Compare the result to the plan you pay for.

  • Result matches the plan? Your NBN is fine — the problem is inside the house. Skip to Step 3.
  • Result well below the plan? Continue to Step 2.

Step 2: Rule out the connection

Restart the modem/router properly (off 30 seconds, on, wait five minutes) and retest — it resolves more cases than anyone admits. Still slow? Test at different times: fine at 10am but crawling at 8pm suggests congestion on your plan tier. Consistently slow at all hours cabled to the router is a genuine provider conversation — and now you have the measurements to make it a short one. Also worth knowing: some addresses on the Gold Coast are eligible for fibre upgrades that transform what's achievable; we can check yours.

Step 3: The usual indoor suspects

  • Wi-Fi distance and walls. Speed halves and halves again through brick, concrete and steel. If the office at the back gets a fraction of what the lounge gets, coverage — not the NBN — is your problem. Mesh Wi-Fi or a cabled access point fixes it properly.
  • The elderly router. The free box from your provider five years ago throttles modern plans and struggles past a dozen devices. Symptoms: fine early, terrible when the family is home.
  • One device, not the internet. If the laptop crawls but phones fly, the laptop is the patient — often a machine needing an SSD, a clean-up or a Wi-Fi driver update (very much our department).
  • Background hogs. Cloud backups mid-day, game updates, a security camera uploading constantly, or the teenager's device seeding — one hungry device can starve the rest. A decent router shows you who's eating the bandwidth.
  • 2.4GHz vs 5GHz. Many homes unknowingly sit on the slower, more congested band. Being steered onto the right band is free speed.

Step 4: Fix the right thing

The pattern from hundreds of callouts: roughly speaking, most "slow internet" complaints end up being Wi-Fi coverage or router quality, a good share are a single struggling device, and only a minority are genuinely the NBN service. Which is great news — the indoor problems are fixable this week, properly, once.
