Data Recovery: What to Do (and NOT Do) When Your Drive Dies or Files Disappear

Few tech moments are worse than realising your files are gone — the drive won't read, the folder is empty, or the laptop won't start at all. First: stop using the device

When a file is deleted, the data usually still exists on the drive — the space is just marked as available. Every minute you keep using the computer, new data may overwrite exactly what you're hoping to recover. If files matter, power down and stop.

The don'ts that destroy data

• Don't keep restarting a clicking or grinding drive. Mechanical noises mean physical failure; every spin-up can scrape more data off the platters permanently.
• Don't install recovery software onto the affected drive. Installing it can overwrite the very files you're trying to save.
• Don't reinstall Windows because the computer won't boot — your files are usually intact behind a fixable software fault, and a reinstall may wipe them.
• Don't open the drive. Drive internals require cleanroom conditions; curiosity here is fatal to data.
• Don't put a wet device in rice. For liquid damage, power off, remove power, and get it looked at quickly — corrosion sets in fast in our humid climate.

What's actually recoverable?

• Accidentally deleted files: very often recoverable if the drive hasn't been heavily used since.
• Formatted drives: frequently recoverable, depending on what was written afterwards.
• Drive with software corruption: good odds — the data is there, the map to it is damaged.
• Failing but functioning drive: good odds if imaged professionally before it dies completely.
• Physically dead drives: sometimes recoverable via specialist lab services — costs more, so it comes down to what the data is worth to you.
• SSDs and phones: more complex than hard drives; deleted data on SSDs can be genuinely unrecoverable due to how they self-clean, which makes acting fast even more important.
