CCTV Installation on the Gold Coast: A Complete Guide for Homeowners

Home security cameras have never been more affordable or more capable — but between wired and wireless, cloud and local storage, and a wall of confusing specs, choosing well is harder than it should be. At Real IT Consulting we install CCTV for homeowners across Southport, Pacific Pines, Coomera and the wider Gold Coast. Here's the plain-English guide we wish every customer had before buying.

Wired vs wireless: the decision that matters most

Wired (PoE) systems run a single network cable to each camera carrying both power and footage. They're the gold standard: rock-solid reliability, no batteries to charge, no Wi-Fi dropouts, and better video quality. The trade-off is installation effort — which is where we come in.

Wireless cameras are quick to install and fine for renters or single-spot coverage, but batteries need charging, Wi-Fi range limits placement, and a Wi-Fi outage means no recording. For whole-home coverage you intend to rely on, wired wins.

What the specs actually mean

  • Resolution: 4MP is a sensible minimum; 4K helps when you need to read a numberplate or identify a face at distance.
  • Night vision: standard infrared gives black-and-white night footage; cameras with colour night vision are worth it for entrances and driveways.
  • Field of view: wider isn't always better — wide lenses cover more area with less detail. Good design mixes both.
  • Smart detection: modern systems distinguish people and vehicles from palm fronds and possums — essential on the Gold Coast unless you enjoy 3am wind alerts.

Where cameras should go

Front door and driveway first — that's where most incidents happen. Then side access paths, the back yard and any shed or garage. Mount high enough to avoid tampering but angled to capture faces, not the tops of heads. We plan positions before a single hole is drilled.

Storage: cloud, local, or both

Local recording to an NVR (network video recorder) means no monthly fees and footage stays in your control. Cloud adds offsite protection — if the recorder is stolen, footage survives. Many of our installs use local recording with cloud backup of key events: the best of both.

Know the rules in Queensland

You can film your own property, but cameras shouldn't be directed into a neighbour's home or yard, and recording audio has stricter rules than video under Queensland law. Sensible placement keeps you both protected and polite — we design with this in mind.

Why professional installation pays off

A DIY kit pointed at the wrong angle, recording to a full hard drive nobody checked, on a network with a default password — we see it often. Professional installation gets you correct placement, tidy cabling, secure network configuration (cameras are a favourite hacker target when left on default settings), remote viewing on your phone set up properly, and support afterwards.
