Network Security for Small Business: Locking the Digital Front Door

Your network is the front door to everything your business owns digitally — files, cameras, EFTPOS, printers, and every computer on the premises. Yet most small business networks around the northern Gold Coast growth corridor, from Yatala to Ormeau and Coomera, are running exactly as the electrician or NBN installer left them years ago. Here's what a securely configured network looks like.

How attackers actually get into networks

• Default router passwords — admin/admin still works on an alarming number of business routers, sometimes reachable from the internet.
• Outdated firmware — routers have security flaws like any computer, and unpatched flaws in internet-facing routers are actively scanned for, around the clock, by automated tools.
• Forgotten remote access — port-forwards and remote desktop rules set up years ago for a long-gone supplier or staff member, still wide open.
• Flat networks — when the guest Wi-Fi, the security cameras, the EFTPOS terminal and the accounts PC all share one network, any compromised device can reach everything else.
• Weak Wi-Fi settings — old WPA/WEP encryption or a Wi-Fi password printed on the wall for every visitor since 2019.

The practical fixes

1. Change router admin credentials and disable management from the internet.
2. Update firmware on routers, access points and switches — then keep it updated.
3. Separate your networks. Guest Wi-Fi for visitors, a separate segment for cameras and smart devices, and the business systems on their own network. If a smart TV or camera is compromised, it shouldn't be able to touch your accounts PC.
4. Use WPA3 (or at minimum WPA2) with a strong passphrase, rotated when staff leave.
5. Close unused doors. Audit port-forwards and remote access; replace crusty old arrangements with a proper VPN or modern zero-trust remote access.
6. Know what's connected. A regular scan of connected devices catches the mystery gadgets and forgotten equipment that accumulate on every network.

Don't forget the physical side

A network point in a public area, or a server/NAS sitting unlocked next to the front counter, undoes every digital control. Keep network equipment out of reach.
